Opening: Oct. 29th 5-7 pm EVDS Kasian Gallery, Professional Faculties Building, University of Calgary; sponsored by Kasian.
BiodiVersions
BiodiVersions refers to a continuing pre-occupation with biology and its structures within various fields of art and design. Where science has become increasingly interested in “designing” biology to meet the needs of various industries (medical, agricultural, material) through mapping, analysing and ultimately intervening within biological systems towards a “produc- tive” end, artists and designers have turned to biological and encoded processes to drive their work towards an emergent set of results (versions).
The artists/designers/thinkers chosen for this show each approach these processes through very precise techniques that lead to highly varied outputs. A set of constraints based on materials, language and spatial distributions are introduced as generative tools for producing iterations that flex and mutate towards a resolution.
About the Artists
Christian Bök is an award winning poet and professor of poetry and creative writing at the University of Calgary. He won the Griffin Poetry Prize for his book of poetry “Eunoia” which was a bestseller in Canada and the UK. His poem “A Virus from Outer Space” is included in this exhibit.
Eveline Kolijn’s art evolves out of her interest in the diversity of human culture and fascination with patterns and processes found in nature. They are interrelated, as human culture is highly determined by its natural surroundings. In response to its existence, humanity has conceived of a variety of spiritual beliefs, philosophies and sciences that explain the living universe. Vision and the other senses shape the perception of our physical reality. This reality is relative. Other living beings experience the world differently than we do. Scientific research has expanded the perception of our world. We can make the micro- and macro cosmos visible to us. Our mind expands perception into an ephemeral world of memories, dreams and imagination.
Open Source Architecture is an international research practice dedicated to the production of dynamic and fluid architectural systems based on inclusive processes of data treatment and technological operators. Its explorative team, formed by Chandler Ahrens, Eran Neuman and Aaron Sprecher, undertakes experimental design with the aim to establish synergetic relations between architectural theory, design methods and technological research and design.
This exhibit will be available for public viewing from October 26 - November 6 and is made possible by the support of Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning LTD.
